Running with the mask? The expert: “No, you risk passing out”

ROME – Since May 4, Italian citizens have resumed running in the parks or away from their home.

Many have wondered: "Do you have to run with a mask or not?".

The answer to this question was provided by Dr. Beltrami , sports doctor.

Beltrami spoke to the microphones of corriere.it in an article by Martino Spadari.

Below are his statements for runners.

“Anyone who runs or in general does physical activity outdoors must not use a mask – explains Gianfranco Beltrami, vice president of the Italian Sports Medical Federation -: he risks becoming intoxicated by breathing in the carbon dioxide he emits with every breath.

So never wear it when running, it hurts.

But here it is enough to apply common sense – Beltrami continues -: you must always have the mask with you, and keep it under your chin, and evaluate the situation.

To maintain the required social distance (two meters when running) it depends on your speed: for example during warm-up you run slowly, at about 5-6 km per hour and therefore just keep 4-5 meters away from the others; on the other hand, if you have a faster pace, at 14-15 km an hour you must also stay at 10 meters.

In short, every situation must be assessed and measures taken that do not involve risks for us and for others ”.
