ROME – A heart attack has taken away Patrick Baumann, the former number one of basketball , only 51 years old. The Swiss executive and member of the International Olympic Committee was in Buenos Aires to attend the Youth Olympic Games on October 14 when he accused an illness and died.
The Olympic world is mourning the loss of Baumann, a no. 1 world basketball player with strong ties to Italy. Already coach and referee, Baumann joined FIBA in 1994 as a lawyer and a year later he was appointed deputy secretary general of the world governing body of basketball.
In 2002, he was unanimously appointed by the FIBA General Secretariat by the Central Board and five years later became a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and recently his post was extended until 2031.
