ROME – The first edition of the Nations League began in September. The tournament, which will take place every two years and involves all European national teams (a total of 55), is divided into several leagues (from A to D) and in various groups.

The teams of each group face each other in round-trip competitions. Promotions and retrocessions are planned in all the leagues. From the League of B to the League of D who wins the group is promoted to the upper league. Who arrives last is relegated to the lower League. The national teams were divided according to their UEFA Coefficient after the conclusion of the qualifications for the 2018 World Cup.

The winning teams of the four groups of the League A qualify for the Final Four (ie the final phase), which is disputed by direct elimination to dry competition (with semi-finals established by drawing lots) in June of an odd year. The semi-finals will be played on 5 and 6 June 2019. The final on 9 June. On the same day the final for the third and fourth place will also be played.

The winner of the final is proclaimed champion of the League.

The rankings of the first edition of the UEFA Nations League will also determine the seeding of the future European Qualifiers, which will guarantee 20 of the 24 available places.
