ROME – Burvin Albion's English striker Marvin Sordell (League One) has decided to retire from football at just 28 years old.
"I have been a victim of racism on various occasions – he said on social media – I saw an incredible amount of bullying, manipulation and verbal abuse that dirty this world. A combination that brings me to the decision to stop being a professional footballer, knowing that I will be a happier man and that I will return to love football as I have not done for years ".
Former English under-21 star Sordell has also thought of suicide in the past : “I was desperate – the footballer writes – I wanted to escape the emotional grip that depression had on me. Writing poems, however, gave me the opportunity to pour emotions out of my mind ".
"The child I was at six – he concludes – would never have imagined what I managed to achieve: I played for England, for Great Britain at the Olympics and in the biggest championship in the world, the Premier, sawing those goals that I dreamed as a boy in the park. I'll be honest though, the bad side of the game has had a detrimental effect on my mental health. "
