He left Japan as a young man to try his luck in Europe. After exploding with the Dutch VVV-Venlo shirt, on 30 August 2012 he was sold to Southampton with which he signed a three-year contract.
With the English club, he played for eight years, making a total of 157 appearances with 9 goals. He is very strong in aerial play and for this reason he is also asserted in the opponents' penalty area.
He was part of the Japanese selection that took part in the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and of the one that won the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar under the guidance of the Italian coach Alberto Zaccheroni.
