ROME – "A disgrace". This is the dry comment of the patron Pallotta from Boston after the comeback suffered by Roma in double numerical superiority in Cagliari. The number one of the club has decided to send the team back in retirement, as in September, after the defeat suffered in Bologna.
Other than advances, Rome continues to be a defective team, and Cagliari's draw forces the company to rewind the ribbon of time, proposing the solution of the shelter inside Trigoria "indefinitely", to look at each other, even at hard snout.
For the club players are the main responsible for the negative seasonal trend; they are in the dock. Not the coach Eusebio Di Francesco, not yet at least. Yes, because, on the one hand the leadership has renewed the trust, on the other hand it is clear that, if things should continue on this line, to pay for all can only be the Abruzzo technician.
Two months ago, the road to retirement had given the illusion of having worked because three consecutive victories had come in the league: against Frosinone, Lazio and Empoli. From the internal ko against Spal to 2-2 in Sardinia, however, the Giallorossi have hit only one win (4-1 at the Olimpico, against Sampdoria) in seven games. Out of 21 points available they have just won 7. Of course, in the middle there was the passage to the Champions League knockout stages, and also a long chain of injuries, which have deprived Di Francesco of key elements for the Giallorossi chessboard, as De Rossi, Lorenzo Pellegrini, El Shaarawy and Dzeko.
The analysis of the last games played in the emergency – Real Madrid, Inter and Cagliari – has convinced the management that the problem is not the coach and for this, while aware of the risks that you are going to confirm, has chosen not to identify in Di Francesco the scapegoat of failures. In the viewfinder there are therefore the players, to be more responsible.
That's why it is more than likely that the ds Monchi – in constant contact with Boston, where Pallotta lives a mix of rage and disappointment – in addition to discussing with the technician, decides to organize a series of individual interviews with the players, perhaps with the support of Francesco Totti.
Of course, the team until Tuesday will remain confined to Trigoria and then leave for the Czech Republic, where Wednesday will face the Viktoria Plzen, in the last and unimportant commitment of the group stage of the Champions.
A success, even wide, will hardly be used to interrupt the withdrawal, which will almost certainly be extended until Sunday, on the occasion of the postponement of the Olimpico against Genoa.
