The Giallorossi offered fifteen million euros but United asked for at least ten more. This is because Smalling, thanks to the good season played in Rome, has entered the target of several clubs' transfer market.
In fact, both Everton of Ancelotti and Juventus of Sarri would have established contacts with United.
Both clubs would have submitted a higher offer than Roma. But that's not all, United could also consider reintegrating him into his squad because he is now a completely rediscovered footballer.
And now what will Roma do? The Giallorossi are a bit stuck on the transfer market because at the moment they don't even have a sports director.
In fact, he would be dealing with the yellow and red transfer market Franco Baldini who turns out to be only an external consultant of the Capitoline club.
Baldini allegedly used his English past to close the Vertonghen affair. The Belgian footballer would have reached an agreement with Roma on the basis of € 3 million per season for the next two years.
Vertonghen is currently free after a long experience with the Tottenham shirt. In London he played 315 games scoring 12 goals. He had previously played 22nd games with Ajax scoring 28 goals.
But obviously Vertonghen would not be usable in the Europa League. Roma will have to play the competition with three titular defenders (Ibanez, Mancini and Kolarov) and with the following reservations (Fazio, Cetin and Jesus).
