ROME – Former UEFA President Lennart Johansson died at the age of 89. The Swedish Football Federation announced it, informing that the manager died due to a recent illness. Born in Stockholm, Johansson was president of AIK Stockholm from 1967 to 1980 and in 1985 he was elected head of the Swedish Football Association, before becoming the No. 1 of the UEFA in 1990.
He remained in office until 2007, when he was defeated by Michel Platini. In charge also as vice-president of Fifa, in 1998 he tried to run for the presidency but was beaten by Sepp Blatter , of whom he was always a bitter opponent.
Under his chairmanship the new Champions League was established, which opened the doors of the major continental competition to non-winning teams in their respective championships and multiplied the revenues for the clubs. (source: Ansa)
