TURIN – Maurizio Sarri's debut is postponed to the third day of the championship. Now it's official, the former Chelsea coach will miss both the debut in Parma but also the home game against "his" Napoli. Juventus announced it on its official website with the following press release:
Maurizio Sarri underwent further medical tests today, which showed a good clinical course . To get a complete recovery from the pneumonia that hit him in the past few days, the coach will not sit on the bench during the first two Serie A games with Parma and Napoli .
The decision was taken to allow the technician, who even today went to the JTC to coordinate the work of his staff, to resume the regular activity as soon as possible.
Juventus. Sarri has pneumonia, it's up to Giovanni Martusciello.
Saturday night in Parma, Maurizio Sarri will not be able to sit on the Juventus bench due to the pneumonia that hit him in recent days. In his place, at Tardini, there will therefore be Giovanni Martusciello, second-experienced coach: Martusciello was already Sarri's deputy in Empoli between 2009 and 2016, and after having personally led the Tuscan team in the season 2016/17, he was second in the Spalletti Inter at Inter between 2017 and 2019.
It will not be the first time that Juventus will start Serie A without their head coach on the bench: in the 2012/13 season it was Massimo Carrera who "inaugurated" the Bianconeri championship, replacing coach Antonio Conte and deputy Angelo Alessio, both disqualified .
Curious that even on that occasion the opponent of the first day was Parma, passed 2-0 at the Stadium with the goals of Lichtsteiner and Pirlo. Going further back in time, until the 1951/52 season, there is another example: after Carver exonerated on August 4, 1951, Juventus hires Sarosi.
The Hungarian technician, in those days in New York, announced that he had accepted the assignment through a letter, sent on September 8th and arrived at his destination three days later. His arrival in Italy will take place only several weeks later, also considering the complications encountered in obtaining a visa for his wife, and consequently, on 9 September, for the first league match against Spal, Luigi Bertolini will sit on the bench.
For the record, the match against the Emilians, played at the Comunale, will end 1-1 with Muccinelli's goals for Juventus and Bennike's draw on a penalty for guests (source: Juventus website).
