José Mari grew up footballing in Sevilla B, made his debut with the first Liga team in February 1997 against Real Sociedad. At the end of the season, also following the relegation of his team, he passes, at the age of 19, into Atlético Madrid, a team that launched him at great levels and allowed him to debut in the Spanish national team.
After three years in Madrid, in December 1999 he moved to Milan for about 40 billion lire. In Italy he played for three years totaling 52 appearances and 5 goals. In the summer of 2002 he returned to Atlético Madrid, where he scored 4 goals despite playing an excellent championship.
