ROME – Former Colombian footballer Jhon Viáfara , winner of the Copa Libertadores in 2004 with the Once Caldas team and 7-year member of the Colombian national team, was extradited today, January 23, from Colombia to the United States, where he will have to respond to drug trafficking charges .

According to reports from the website of the newspaper El Espectador, the former player was requested by the court for the eastern district of Texas to respond to two accusations concerning the production and distribution of drugs in the USA. Viáfara was captured on March 19, 2019 in Colombia. On September 27 of the same year, the Supreme Court found no irregularities in the extradition request and approved it. The government signed it in a resolution of 10 October.

According to the indictment, the former footballer, who also played in the Premier League with Portsmouth and Southampton between 2005 and 2008, was part of a drug trafficking organization that, since 2008, has used ships, submarines, planes and trucks to transporting drugs from Colombia to Central and North America "on behalf of the Gulf clan".
