Futre: “Berlusconi stole a golden ball from me, made him win in Gullit”

OPORTO (PORTUGAL) – The former Portuguese national footballer Luis Futre, legend of Atletico Madrid and Porto, and with brief spells in Milan also in Italy, in 1987 he would have been stolen from the Golden Ball by the then president of Milan Silvio Berlusconi, who would have worked to have Ruud Gullit assigned him.

Futre protests: "Gullit would have deserved more Golden Balls but that year I should have won it".

On the online edition of the Mundo Deportivo the former Portuguese champion says that that year he had all the titles to win the prestigious award, "I was fighting to win -Futre says- but then the prize was awarded to Gullit, the star Dutch from Milan, and I was second.

Gullit is certainly a champion who deserved to win more gold balls, but not that year. Berlusconi was said to have done everything to get his Dutch player assigned.

Before going to Atletico I had won the Champions League with Porto and played the best game of my career in the final. Gullit had been with Milan for a few months and had only won one championship in the Netherlands ".

Futre recalls the very low vote given to him by a Portuguese journalist, "throughout his life he never wanted to explain to me the reason for that vote". (source ANSA).
