ROME – Algeria qualifies for the Africa Cup semi-final (beating Ivory Coast on penalties) and chaos breaks out in France .
In the night, in fact, thousands of people with Algerian flags took to the streets in large cities such as Paris, Marseille or Lyon. The carousels and the scenes of joy lasted until late at night, in some cases turning into violence and acts of vandalism, or even drama.
During the celebrations in Montpellier, in fact, an Algerian fan lost control of the car and mowed a family, killing his mother and sending two minors to the hospital, including a seriously ill baby.
Seventy-four people eventually stopped. Interior Minister, Christophe Castaner, this morning spoke of "unacceptable" violence.
In Paris, the Barbès neighborhood, where a large Algerian community lives, was totally blocked from traffic by the police. As part of the ring road, creating serious traffic disruptions. Many fans then paraded by car on the Champs Elysees, where, however, in the night some individuals took advantage of the festive chaos to shatter some windows and steal from a couple of shops.
