NEW YORK – Former American boxing champion Pernell Whitaker has died. According to US media reports, he died in Virginia Beach on July 15, 2019 at the age of 55, hit by a car while crossing an intersection.

Whitaker, 55, nicknamed 'Sweet Pea', is considered one of the greatest boxers of all time. In 1983 he won gold at the Panamerican Games in Caracas and the following year at the Los Angeles Olympics. He has been world champion in four categories: light, welter jr, welterweight and lightweight. In 2006 it was introduced in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

He then began his career as a professional, in which he won four world titles in four different weight categories. He is considered one of the greatest boxers of all time.

Pernell Whitaker was born on January 2, 1964 in Norfolk, Virginia, to Raymond and Novella Whitaker. He died at Virginia Beach on 15 July 2019 at the age of 55, overwhelmed by a car as he was crossing an intersection.

Whitaker has had a successful amateur career, having started fighting at the young age of nine. His confirmed meetings are 214, victories 201, 91 of which completed by KO; nevertheless Pernell claims to have fought more than 500 beginner boxer matches.

Despite having lost against the two-time Olympic gold medalist Ángel Herrera Vera in the final of the World Championship in 1982, he had the opportunity to redeem himself on the latter defeating him in turn four times, in one circumstance in the final of the Pan American Games of Caracas in 1983.
