ROME – Fiorentina passes officially from the Della Valle family to those of Rocco Commisso . The sale was completed in Milan. JP Morgan and Chiomenti – a note reads – acted respectively as financial and legal advisors for buyers; the ultra high team of Credit Suisse Italy and Bonelli Erede acted as financial and legal advisors for sellers respectively.
"Church? We will do everything to keep it " . The Fiorentina fans, anxious about the company fortunes, want above all to know if the new ownership intends to cede the jewel of the Federico Chiesa house. Commisso in an interview with Francesco Velluzzi of Gazzetta dello Sport assures that Fiorentina has no intention of giving up the attacker: "I want to keep it, let's hope", says the new patron. Rocco Commisso is president and managing director of Mediacom Communications Corporation , a company founded in 1995 to acquire and reinforce cable systems in US communities that are not well served by this service. In January 2017, Commisso acquired the majority stake in New York Cosmos and became its president. The Cosmos represent the best-known American soccer team in the world.
From the beginning at Yankee Stadium in 1971, the iconic club won the record number of eight professional football leagues and brought some of the greatest stars of international football to the US, including Pelè, Franz Beckenbauer, Giorgio Chinaglia, Carlos Alberto , Johan Neeskens and, more recently, Raúl and Marcos Senna.
Self made man . Rocco Commisso's relationship with football has lasted for more than 60 years and started on the sandy beaches and on the streets of his hometown, Marina di Gioiosa Ionica in the Province of Reggio Calabria. In 1962, at the age of 12, he emigrated to the United States with his mother and his two sisters to be reunited with his brother and his father, who had moved to America in 1956. In 1967 he graduated from the Mount Saint Micheal Academy located in Bronx and later attended Columbia University, with a full scholarship, earning a degree in Industrial Engineering and an MBA from the Graduate Business School.
Commisso played in Columbia Lions from 1967 to 1970 . He was a member of the freshman team that finished the championship with an unbeaten record of victories and last season played as co-captain in the 1970 team, which for the first time brought Columbia to NCAA Playoffs (National Collegiate Athletic Association). Commisso has received the All-Ivy League Honor three times and was invited to the selections to join the US soccer team for the 1972 Olympics. After playing for Columbia University, Commisso played as a semi-professional in the area of New York coached youth soccer teams for 15 years and remained an active contributor to the men's and women's football programs of his home university.
In the mid-seventies he co-founded the 'Friends of Columbia Soccer' association and from 1978 to 1986 he was the president. In 2013, Columbia recognized its contribution to the university by renaming the Baker Athletics Complex football stadium as 'Rocco B. Commisso'. Commisso has received numerous professional awards throughout his career, which include the inclusion in the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame and the Vanguard Award for Excellence in Leadership, the highest recognition in the telecommunications sector.
For his dedication of a lifetime to the world of football, Commisso received the honor of the New York City Soccer Gala and was included in the Columbia Athletics Hall of Fame and in the Italian American Sport Hall of Fame. Commisso, proud of his Italian origins, received the award in 2018 in the Tribute to the Great Immigrants of the Carnegie Corporation, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the Gruppo Esponenti Italian Award (GEI) and the Foreign Policy Association medal.
