BERGAMO – Mourning in the world of sport and cycling: Felice Gimondi is dead . The world-famous cyclist was 76 years old.

He was taken ill while bathing in the waters of Giardini Naxos, in the province of Messina. The attempts to rescue him by the lifeguards and the 118 were in vain. The Coast Guard of Giardini intervened on the spot and started the investigation of the case on what happened.

Born in Sedrina on 29 September 1942, Gimondi had been a professional from 1965 to 1979, capable of winning uphill, time trial and even in the sprint. He is one of seven riders to have won all three of the big rides: the Giro d'Italia (three times, in 1967, 1969 and 1976), the Tour de France (in 1965) and the Vuelta a España (in 1968) .
