Coronavirus stops calcium. Who does the Scudetto go to? Who goes to Serie B? Playoff and playout hypotheses

ROME – The coronavirus is expanding across the country, for this reason the government has decided to suspend all sports activities, including the Italian Serie A football championship, until April 3.

Despite the national priority is health, the Figc and League A managers must still make decisions on the current championship because in any case they will be forced to submit a list to UEFA at the end of the season with the names of the seven teams that will participate in the next Champions League (four) and Europa League (three) editions.

Then it will be necessary to make decisions also on relegations because they will have to be replaced by the teams promoted by the Serie B. In short, at the moment our head is elsewhere but those who manage football must still start thinking seriously about how to make these choices.

For this reason, an extraordinary assembly was held today in the FIGC headquarters. The participants drew up a plan with four hypotheses to complete the season. The parties will meet again on 23 March.

Coronavirus stops the championship, four hypotheses to decide on the championship, places in the cups and teams relegated to Serie B.

  1. End the championship regularly by postponing its end to 20 or 31 May. Provided that after April 3 you can return to play regularly because otherwise this hypothesis should be discarded. Impossible to finish the Italian Cup in good time, according to what emerged today the trophy would be awarded with a final four next summer.
  2. The second hypothesis is at least innovative. Assign the league title with playoffs and establish the relegated teams in Serie B with playouts. Model that is already being applied by other team sports such as basketball. Even for the second hypothesis, the Italian Cup would be awarded in the summer.
  3. The third hypothesis involves the crystallization of the ranking and the assignment of the title based on the current ranking. Again according to the current classification, the teams qualified for Champions and Europa League and those relegated to Serie B will be established. Even for the third hypothesis, the Italian Cup would be awarded in the summer.
  4. The last hypothesis, the one that nobody really wants to marry, provides for the non-assignment of the Scudetto. This last hypothesis is the same as the third with regard to the teams qualified for the European cups and the relegated ones. Also in this case, the Italian Cup would be awarded next summer.
