Coronavirus Giro d’Italia: Kruijswijk and Matthews positive. Mitchelton announces retirement

Other cases of coronavirus hit the Giro d'Italia. Kruijswijk and Matthews positive, the former was one of the favorites for the final victory.

At least two cyclists after Simon Yates and six staff members in the Giro d'Italia teams tested positive for the coronavirus. The riders are Steven Kruijswijk of team Jumbo-Visma and Michael Matthews of Team Sumweb. The four staff members are part of the Mitchelton-Scott which announced the retirement from the Giro. Kruijswijk has no pain or symptoms, according to his team.

Jumbo-Visma confirmed that the Dutch rider, Steven Kruijswijk, following the positive outcome of the coronavirus buffer, is forced to leave the Giro d'Italia and "will not be at the start of the tenth stage". The cyclist "does not complain of symptoms".

The other riders and staff members have instead tested negative twice and can therefore continue the Giro d'Italia. “It is a great disappointment to receive this news – comments Kruijswijk – in the team we take all the preventive measures. It is a pity to have to leave the tour like this ”.

Mitchelton announces retirement

In all, 571 tests were carried out and "two riders, one from Team Sunweb and one from Team Jumbo-Visma, tested positive". It reads in the press release. They are also joined by "six staff members, four from Mitchelton-Scott (Yates' team, ed), one from Team Ag2r-La Mondiale and one from Team Ineos Grenadiers". All eight positives "were entrusted to the doctors of the respective teams who ordered the isolation measures." A hard blow especially for Mitchelton-Scott , who decided to retire as a whole from the Giro.

“I don't think there is the possibility of missing the Giro d'Italia: the situation is under control, it is right to continue with a strong and high level of attention”, explains the president of the Federciclismo, Renato Di Rocco. “The sense of responsibility in cycling and in sport is high, at the moment I am in Fiorenzuola, where the under 23 and junior track European Championships take place: last night a boy tested positive and I stopped the team.
