Coronavirus, double the depressed players. The hardest hit women

ROME – Coronavirus quarantine does not have deleterious effects only on ordinary mortals but also on sports champions.

Going from a super active life to one made of hours and hours on the sofa is not easy at all so the number of depressed footballers would have doubled. Among them, the most affected would be women.

Cases of depression among professional footballers are doubling, due to the coronavirus emergency, and women are the most affected.

This is the complaint contained in a research conducted by the world players' union prof, FifPro, in collaboration with the university hospital of Amsterdam, which came to the conclusion that on average more than 10% of athletes suffer from depressive symptoms.

The survey involved around 1,600 athletes from different countries, from Europe to the USA. According to the results, "22% of women and 13% of men reported symptoms compatible with the diagnosis of depression".

A state of "generalized anxiety" was reported by 18% of the players and 16% of the players surveyed.

In short, practically all the players are trying to keep fit by training at home but it's not the same as before …

The players lack the grass, they lack the outdoor training and above all the company of the other players is missing.

Perhaps also for this reason Cristiano Ronaldo and Ibrahimovic have already started training together with other players abroad (source Ansa).
