ROME – Less than a hundred days to Euro 2020 . The first European touring soccer championship chose the worst moment to debut. It was supposed to be the first traveling tournament in history, but in times of coronavirus, mobilizing so many people in the main capitals of Europe seems practically suicide . So you start to think concretely about a possible cancellation or postponement of the competition for European national teams.
Coronavirus, move Euro 2020 to June 2021? It is the most convenient hypothesis from an economic point of view.
At the moment there would be three possibilities: play the 2020 European football championship behind closed doors, postpone the competition to June 2021 or cancel it completely, starting from the European football championship of Germany 2024.
Of the three hypotheses, the least traumatic from an economic point of view is the move to June 2021. Canceling the tournament, or playing it behind closed doors, would imply an economic loss of almost 500 million euros between ticket sales and related activities. None of the organizers want to deprive themselves of this gain.
So to date, the most likely hypothesis seems to be to move the competition to June 2021, when the coronavirus vaccine should have been found.
Playing it next June seems almost impossible despite the Uefa faults. It will also be difficult to play the Olympics in Japan. To date, no official decisions have been made yet.
