CATANIA – A 16-year-old referee was attacked in the Catania area by a home team player who, in the 15th minute of the second half, had just been sent off for protests after a caution during the football game of the second category football championship between Castel di Iudica and Pedara. The race director was also chased by some local fans. The executives of the two companies immediately intervened in his defense. The match has been suspended. Carabinieri intervened on the spot and escorted him out of the country as a precautionary measure.

The attacked referee refused treatment

The referee has not been medicated, nor has filed a complaint. The episode was made known by the deputy of the Democratic Party to the Sicilian Regional Assembly (Ars) Anthony Barbagallo who speaks of "yet another ugly episode that has nothing to do with sports culture". "It's time to stop as it happened in Lazio – adds the former Councilor for Sports of the Sicilian Region – for similar episodes. The Federation, the Hague and the Cones evaluate the stop at the championships ".
